At DNeers we have worked with many Content Management Systems in the past 5 years (By the way we just completed 5 years in business… Yaaaaaayyyyy!!!) like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Magento etc. We are counting 300 plus websites this year. Our clients have always asked us to guide them choose the best. Well, addressing that would be one of the most complicated yet critical in the business of building websites.
However, we would always reiterate the right things to be kept in mind while building an ecommerce website. Budget, Products, Target Market, Type of site (Marketplace), external application integration etc. While the topic is not this always keep this in mind while you plan to build a website, be it anything most importantly Magento.
For the ease of comparison we are only going to look at Magento against WordPress as Drupal and Joomla may not be a fit at all if you are considering a quick, low cost and easy to manage ecommerce content management system.
Lets look at why choosing Magento can be wiser one at a time.
The fundamental difference:
Magento is built for and as an ecommerce platform while wordpress is a blog and has extensions and plugins to convert the core platform into an ecommerce enabled one. TO further explain the same, shopping cart, payments, shipping methods, web services, reporting are all an inbuilt option within Magento content management system.
Cost to build and maintain your ecommerce website:
WordPress may seem to score on this point but in true sense it actually does not, it becomes quite expensive considering the maintanence involved with wordpress. For Ex: It is only safe (from a hacking stand point) if a wordpress website has the most updated version all the time, the same applies to the plugins used. The same is not the case with Magento as older versions can still be safe and protect the website from being hacked.
Plugins really stand out:
In our experience the plugins we found on Magento is far superior than the ones we found for wordpress. Magento plugins are a little expensive comparitively, however they seems to be highly mature in the process they are built for. For Instance: Market place plugins in Magento are the best to integrate and use while compared to any other platform.
This is one big reason we always recommend Magento against WordPress. The way wordpress is built is not greatly safe and to increase the safety of this platform they keep updating all the time. Which means you are supposed to be updating the platform whenever there is a new release. This is only easy if you know a little bit of development, to give you an example: if plugins that you have installed does not support the newer version you may have to change to a supported plugin. If you are using a template it may not affect the design part of it laregely but if you have customised your theme or built one then you are in for a lot of trouble.
Most website development companies say they can do a WP site for $199 and less, yes this is possible. However considering all the above, how about choosing a Magento theme and pay a little more on implementation in a long term. We are sure you would hate to be hacked and go through the process of restoring your site and customer confidence right?
